Cashback Loyalty Program: When Money Back Beats Points and Stamps

Cashback Loyalty Program: When Money Back Beats Points and Stamps

Ask a UAE customer what they want from a loyalty scheme and the most common answer isn't points, tiers or badges — it's "money back." Cashback is the language this market already speaks: bank cards advertise it, delivery apps dangle it, petrol apps round trips up with it. So when a café, pharmacy or boutique asks whether a cashback loyalty program would work better than stamps or points, it's the right question. The honest answer: cashback is the strongest format for some businesses and the wrong one for others — and whichever you pick, it only pays off if the customer can actually see the balance.

What a Cashback Loyalty Program Actually Is

The mechanics are simple: a customer spends AED 200, earns a percentage back — say 5%, so AED 10 — and that AED 10 becomes store credit they redeem on a future visit. Not cash out of the till, not a bank transfer. Credit that only exists inside your business.

That last part is what makes the model work. A 5% discount gives away margin on today's sale and buys you nothing tomorrow. Five percent cashback costs you nothing today, creates a small debt the customer wants to collect, and — because it's redeemed against your own products at retail price — costs you only the wholesale value if they return. If they don't return, it costs nothing at all. It's the same logic that makes a loyalty program beat blanket discounting: the reward is tied to the next visit, not the current one.

Cashback vs Points vs Stamps: Which Fits Your Business?

All three formats reward repeat visits. The difference is what the customer has to understand — and what your sales look like.

Stamps win when customers buy the same thing. Coffee, karak, juice, a blow-dry, a car wash. "Buy 9, get the 10th free" needs no explanation, and a digital stamp card shows progress at a glance. If 80% of your transactions are one item at a similar price, stop here — stamps are unbeatable.

Points win when you want control. Points let you weight rewards by product, run double-points days, and build tiers. The cost: customers have to learn your exchange rate. "You have 340 points" means nothing until someone explains what 340 points buys — which is why so many points balances die unredeemed. (We compared the two head-to-head in points vs stamps.)

Cashback wins when basket sizes vary. A supermarket basket can be AED 40 or AED 400. A pharmacy ticket, AED 25 or AED 600. A restaurant table, shawarma or a family dinner. Stamps can't price that fairly, and points add math. Cashback is denominated in the one currency every customer already understands — dirhams. "You have AED 23.50 to spend here" needs zero explanation, feels like real money, and scales perfectly with how much someone actually spends. That's why cashback suits retail, groceries, pharmacies and restaurants with wide check ranges — the businesses where a stamp card never quite fit.

Where Cashback Programs Quietly Die: The Invisible Balance

Here's the failure mode almost nobody budgets for. The customer earns AED 10 back. Where does that balance live? Printed on a receipt that's binned at the door. Inside an app they won't download. In your POS, visible only when a cashier remembers to mention it.

An invisible balance doesn't pull anyone back. The customer forgets the credit exists, the return visit it was supposed to buy never happens, and six months later you conclude "cashback didn't work for us." The format was fine. The balance was just buried.

Put the Balance in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet

The fix is to make the credit a visible object the customer carries. With Wally, your cashback card lives in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet — joined in one QR scan at the counter, in about twenty seconds, with nothing to download. The face of the pass shows the number that does the pulling: the balance, in dirhams, sitting next to their bank cards and boarding passes, seen every time the wallet opens.

Each purchase is one scan: the cashback is added and the balance updates on the customer's phone in real time, so both sides always see the same number — no receipts, no "let me check the system."

And because it's a wallet pass, it comes with the channel that makes the whole model compound: free push notifications on the lock screen. "You have AED 35 waiting — valid until the end of the month" is the single highest-converting message a cashback program can send, and on SMS it would cost you fils every time. On a wallet pass it's free, unlimited, and lands exactly where the balance lives.

Setting the Rate: Simple Rules That Keep the Math Safe

Start between 3% and 7%. Below 3%, the balance builds too slowly to feel real. Above 7%, you're funding a discount habit. A 5% rate on an AED 100 average ticket means the customer returns holding AED 5 — small enough to be safe, visible enough to work.

Remember you're spending at cost. AED 10 of credit redeemed against your products costs you the wholesale value — often AED 4–6 — and it arrives attached to a fresh visit that usually spends well past the credit.

Set an expiry, then warn before it hits. Three to six months keeps liability off your books, and the expiry push notification is really a comeback message wearing a deadline. The same principle applies as with expiring points: expiry without a reminder feels like theft; expiry with a reminder feels like service.

Pick one format per business — and it's allowed to be stamps. If you run a single-product counter, a stamp card beats cashback. If your tickets swing, cashback beats both alternatives. Running both confuses everyone.

The Dirham Is the Best Loyalty Currency — If It's Visible

A cashback loyalty program works because it skips the translation step every other format needs: the reward is already in the customer's own currency. It fails only when the balance hides in a receipt or an unopened app. Put it on a wallet pass, keep the dirhams on the lock screen, and let the balance do the advertising.

Wally puts cashback cards, stamp cards and memberships on Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes your customers join in one scan — with the scanning app, dashboard and free push notifications included. Book a short demo and have balances pulling customers back this month.
