How INNOV8 turned its incubator into a cashless campus with one stored-value card.

INNOV8 Incubator wanted tenants to buy coffee, drinks, food and office supplies on site without cash, cards or a separate app. With a Wally Stored Value Card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, tenants top up a balance, tap at the counter and watch the balance update on the pass itself.

Overview

INNOV8 Incubator and Wally, in brief.

INNOV8 Incubator hosts startups and their teams under one roof, with an on-site café, a stocked pantry and an office-supplies desk. Small purchases happened all day, but every one of them meant cash, a card terminal or a tab someone had to chase at month end. The team wanted a single, cashless way for tenants to pay that felt part of the incubator rather than a bolt-on.

Wally issued each tenant a stored-value card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. The pass carries the INNOV8 brand, the member's name, the validity date of their tenancy and, most importantly, a live balance in AED. Tenants top up at reception or online, then tap their phone at the café, pantry or supplies desk to pay.

Because the balance lives on the pass, tenants always know what they have left, and INNOV8 sees what sells, when and to whom. When a startup graduates or a tenancy ends, the card is switched off centrally.

The challenge

What was holding INNOV8 Incubator back.

Before
Coffee, food and supplies were paid for with cash, cards or running tabs, and reconciling them took staff time every month.
With Wally
One prepaid balance on the tenant's phone. Every purchase is a logged tap, so there is nothing to reconcile.
Before
A separate payments app would never get installed for a coffee.
With Wally
The card sits in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, already on every tenant's phone. Adding it takes one scan.
Before
No view of on-site spend or which perks tenants actually used.
With Wally
Top-ups and redemptions are reported per tenant and per point of sale, which informs what the café and pantry stock.
The solution

How the Wally Stored Value Card works for INNOV8 Incubator.

INNOV8 Incubator stored-value member card in Apple Wallet showing a 362.00 AED balance, member name and validity date
1
Brand header and regionThe INNOV8 wordmark and a UAE marker, so the card is recognisable among bank cards in the wallet.
2
Live balanceThe AED balance sits in the top corner where a bank card shows its number. It updates after every tap and top-up.
3
Campus stripA photo of the incubator floor. Wallet passes carry full-bleed imagery, not just a colour.
4
Member and validityThe tenant's name and the valid-to date, so staff and the tenant both know the card is current.
01

Tenant onboarded

When a company joins INNOV8, each team member receives a link and adds the stored-value card to their wallet. The validity date matches the tenancy.

02

Top up the balance

Tenants add funds at reception or online. The new balance appears on the pass within seconds.

03

Tap to redeem

At the café, pantry or supplies desk the tenant taps their phone on the Wally reader. The amount is deducted and the balance updates on the card.

04

Managed centrally

INNOV8 can credit a welcome balance, adjust a card, or deactivate it when a tenancy ends, without touching the phone.

Before Wally

  • Cash, card terminals and running tabs for small purchases
  • Month-end reconciliation by hand
  • No data on on-site spend
  • Perks hard to distribute fairly
  • Leavers kept access to tabs

With Wally

  • One prepaid balance in Apple & Google Wallet
  • Every purchase logged as a tap
  • Spend reported per tenant and point of sale
  • Welcome credit issued centrally
  • Card deactivated when the tenancy ends
Insights

Why it worked.

Insight 01

Stored value works where purchases are small and frequent

A coffee, a snack, a pack of pens. When every transaction is tiny, prepaid balance removes the friction of paying rather than the cost.

Insight 02

The balance on the pass builds trust

Tenants never have to open an app or ask how much is left. Seeing the number change after a tap is what makes the card feel real.

Insight 03

Validity ties spend to the tenancy

Because the card expires with the lease, INNOV8 never chases graduated startups for open tabs or unused credit.

Insight 04

Spend data shapes the space

Redemption reports show what sells and when, so the café and pantry stock what tenants actually buy.

Tenants top up once and tap for everything, from coffee to printer paper. It made the whole campus cashless overnight.

How to replicate this in your business.

Five decisions from the INNOV8 Incubator programme that transfer to any coworking & incubators operator.

  1. 1

Use stored value where purchases are small and frequent; use stamps or points where you want to reward frequency.

  2. 2

Show the balance on the pass itself. It removes support questions and makes top-ups feel safe.

  3. 3

Tie card validity to the membership or tenancy so off-boarding is automatic.

  4. 4

Put readers at every point of sale so the card works the same way everywhere on site.

  5. 5

Use welcome credit as an onboarding perk; it is cheaper than discounts and gets the card used on day one.

At reception or through an online top-up link. The balance on the wallet pass updates within seconds of the top-up being confirmed.

Anything sold on site: coffee and drinks at the café, food and snacks from the pantry, and office supplies from the supplies desk. Every point of sale has a Wally NFC reader.

No. The stored-value card lives in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. The tenant taps their phone on the reader and the amount is deducted.

Gift Card Program for Small Business: Prepaid Revenue That Recruits Your Next Regulars

A gift card is paid before it costs you anything and arrives with a personal recommendation attached — prepaid revenue, customer acquisition, and overspend in one product. What kills it for small businesses is plastic: print runs, notebook balance tracking, and cards forgotten in drawers. A digital gift card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet is bought by link in a minute, tracks its own balance, nudges unredeemed cards from the lock screen, and hands every redeemed recipient straight onto your loyalty card.

Digital Membership Card: Plastic, PDF, App, or Wallet — What Actually Works

A digital membership card only earns the name if members can actually find it at the door. Plastic costs money and says nothing, PDFs vanish into inboxes, and nobody installs an app for a place they visit twice a week. Here's the honest four-format comparison — and why the card that lives in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet is the one that handles check-in, updates, and renewals by itself.
